Why Apps Are Not the Future

Dave Winer on why linking is important, and walled gardens don’t work in the long run.

The optimal solution here would be for the apps to be able to link to each other, in a common, open, standardized way. Of course, that would require everyone to agree on something, and to use it without adding incompatible extensions. That’s got as much liklihood of happening as sentient bacon-based lifeforms coming down from the stars to teach us a better way to play bocce.

Considering a VPS

I pay about $20/month for hosting with Dreamhost. I’m reasonably happy with the service they provide, but they’ve had more than a bit of downtime in the past few years, and something weird happens every once in a while that causes my MySQL databases to get corrupted. That’s…not good.

When I first signed up, VPS options were few and far between. They were also expensive. Not quite so much as colo, but vastly different from shared hosting. Things seem to be a lot different now. Linode has a VPS for the same price I’m paying for shared hosting. They also have a rather stellar reputation.

I’m seriously considering this.
